Winter Wapping Walk

5 February @ 10:30 - 17:00

Circular walk of about 3-4 miles around an area with some interesting history, e.g. Captain Cook lived in Shadwell in the 1760s and John Newton is said to have landed his slaves nearby before seeing the light and writing Amazing Grace. Captain Kidd and many others were executed in the area. Judge Jeffreys (Bloody Assizes) was captured attempting to escape to Hamburg, and Samuel Pepys and Charles Dickens are said to have visited one of the then many pubs in the area. We will probably visit the Town of Ramsgate pub towards the end of the walk for a drink and something to eat.

Derek Fowler will be leading this walk and has done it several times and led 4 groups around it. It is one of his favourite London walks. It is not that long but can be extended on the day to include St Katherine’s Dock and a walk alongside the river Thames for any that so wish.
