New to boating?

If you are new to the boating world, there are many ways to learn and find out more.

Our club has many members with years of experience in all forms of water based activities who would be only too willing to pass on their knowledge. Some of our club evenings are given over to members or visiting speakers for educational events.

Examples include :- Types and practical use of flares
RNLI – survival at sea
First Aid at sea certificate courses
Radio communications
Navigation

We also run various rallies each year where non boat owners have the opportunity to sail with the more experienced members around the Solent.

Sutton Mariners is also affiliated to The Royal Yachting Association. This organisation, among other things, has a structured training scheme for all aspects of boating and sailing. Theory & practical courses are held at various establishments around the country. Information on these can be found on the RYA website or in boating magazines.

Equipment required to start sailing does not have to be extensive or expensive. Apart from warm clothing, soft shoes with non-slip soles would be required. Initially, some safety equipment could be borrowed but it would be advisable to eventually get your own set of good waterproofs & boots plus personal lifejacket. These can be obtained from chandlers or sometimes second-hand from boat jumbles etc.
