RYA Cruising Manager Q&A

Stuart Carruthers from the RYA will be here to answer any questions you may have.  We hope to cover topics such as Calor dropping the 4.5kg bottles, what documentation do we need when sailing to Europe plus many more. Please have a think about any questions you may wish to ask beforehand.  This will be a very useful and informative evening, driven by the audience.

London’s More Important River – a talk by Jeremy Batch

What do navigational buoys, lighthouses, tidal power, Britain’s first aeroplane, gunpowder, rockets, the light bulb, the diode, television, electronic warfare, the safety match, the rifle, the bouncing bomb, plate glass, plastic, petrol, gin, dog biscuits and the world’s most powerful warship all have in common? Answer: all were invented, developed, manufactured or tested along the River Lea and its accompanying man-made canal, the Lee Navigation. It has been our border with Scandinavia, London’s lifeline during the Great Plague, and the venue for the 2012 Olympic Games. It boasted Britain’s first lock with mitre gates, and now London’s newest: the Three Mills Lock on the Prescott Channel. What were the Three Mills used for, and why are there only two?

Celia Holman – Noel and Elizabeth Viner Brady – the unsung saviours of Twickenham’s heritage riverside

Apart from a small plaque in York House in Twickenham, and mentions in multiple footnotes of local history books, the story of the Viner Bradys 50 years of living on Twickenham's riverside has never been told before. This highly illustrated talk will demonstrate the extent to which the preservation of so much of what we see and value today on Twickenham's riverside is done to the efforts of one particularly well equipped (she had the money, he had the legal background) couple. Sine qua non!

Maggie Adamson talk (+TEAMS)

Maggie Adamson, Shetlander, Commercial Skipper. Professional Musician and volunteer Lifeboat Crew with the Lerwick Lifeboat is returning for her second talk at Sutton Mariners. She's never far from her fiddle so no doubt there will be a few tunes as well as sailing stories. This year Maggie has taken time out from skippering The Swan and will be at the helm of Gavin Howe’s Swan 76 Tigris for charter trips around the UK and surrounding waters. So Maggie has replaced one Swan with another, and it looks like the second will be a tad more luxurious than the first! The Swan, named Sail Training Vessel of the Year by UK Sail Traing and the MCA, took part in the Tall Ships last year, so between that, Maggie's RNLI volunteering, the upcoming year in charge of a 76 foot top-tier cruiser and some exemplary fiddle playing, this week at the Mariners will be one you don't want to miss!

The Green Blue – RYA Presentation (+TEAMS)

Webinar starts at 19:30 with big room available from 19:00 The Green Blue is the joint environment programme developed by the RYA and British Marine. Launched in 2005, its mission is to promote a sustainable leisure marine sector in the UK. As a boating community we enjoy getting out on the water and experiencing the beautiful environment around us. We therefore play an important role in helping to protect our marine and inland waters to safeguard the wildlife and habitats with which we share our boating environment.

Visitors are welcome on any Thursday club night held at the VBS Community Stadium
