Mudlarking; a fascinating insight into the treasures revealed by the Thames at low tide

by Official Mudlark and author Jenny Ridgewell For years I’ve been a food writer but when I returned to London to live by the Thames, things changed. At low tide I saw people on the foreshore poking about in the shingle. What were they looking for? To find out I joined them and eventually registered as one of 5000 official Mudlarks that have a licence to search the riverbank. I was so excited to discover London’s history from discarded things in the river that I’ve written a book - Guide to Mudlarking - and I’ll share my foreshore finds and stories with you. Votive offerings from this sacred river like Ganesh emerging from the mud, ancient bone tools from the people that lived in Putney, pottery pieces with fascinating stories like the paste that sailors took for long journeys. Things I’ve never found like the typeface that was thrown into the river, discovered years later and used on the architecture for Tideways Supersewer. Jenny Ridgwell
